Whinhall United 4 – Tantallon Victoria 2

Subs: Devlin

Goals: Devlin, McQuade

A game in which… never was the cliche “game of two halves” more appropriate than at Broadwood yesterday. Whinhall had the best of the first with Tantallon coming back in the second and probably deserving more balance to the final score. It was a tight and edgy affair for the opening stages with the home side looking a little more flowing in terms of attack. There was an early chance for the visitors when McQuade found his way in behind the United defence to hit the byline before squaring the ball to strike partner Bonaccorsi who put the ball past the post.

Tantallon played offside effectively enough to provide real frustration to the opposition forwards for much of the half but a slip in concentration or loss of focus, perhaps due to differences of opinion about pushing the defence so far up the park, saw Whinhall pounce twice in quick succession. They were to add a third when Morrison picked up the ball in the box and tried to force the issue for Tally Vics by driving into space to play a through ball. It was intercepted and launched into the open net from distance to give the home team a three goal advantage.

Cairney took the gloves for the second period with Morrison taking up a position in central midfield and Devlin coming on for Williams to partner McQuade. O’Donnell and Davie Bonaccorsi took up the wide positions in the midfield four. The new line up seemed to work for Tantallon and with Morrison pulling the strings in midfield chances started to be carved out with Devlin making an early impact to proceedings beating two men in the box to drive home Tally Vic’s first goal of the game. McQuade, Devlin and Dave Bonaccorsi were a constant thorn in the Whinhall defence throughout the second half and McQuade notched a second after being put clean through by Jamieson. Tantallon continued to push for an equalizer while looking comfortable at the back for most of the half but in the dying minutes Whinhall broke free of the defence to make the result safe. All in a good preseason game with way more positives than negatives made better still by the fantastic sunshine.

Moment to savour… Usually a goal stands out but yesterday there was a passage of one touch play between midfield and attack that was as good as anything ever seen in the colours of Tantallon.

Head in hands moment… Poor Mo’s face at the third goal. And when he hurt his nose in the net. And when the keeper smacked him on the nose with the ball.

Huntly’s Hero’s…. It’s going to be hard to do this section this year when there are so many guys all working hard for the team as happened yesterday. Gavin Devlin had a huge influence on the game while Davie Bonaccorsi impressed again. McQuade was the man the Tally Vic fans adore during the second half especially and well done to Jamieson on his first 90 minutes in a Tally Vic shirt.

On the sidelines…. Our preseason games have had something in common as all of them have been against teams who we’ve befriended through Twitter. This was another great game against a great club and it was brilliant for me meeting Chris and Simon from Whinhall. I could have stood and talked to Chris for another hour outside Broadwood. They’re a great bunch of guys and penciled in for a friendly again soon. There’s even talk of a joint awayday. Watch this space.
